Yoga is a spiritual and physical discipline which originated in India over five thousand years ago. In the 1980s, the commercialization of yoga began as the practice spread to the West. Many people have found that practicing yoga is a source of stress relief, and has had many positive mental impacts as well as physical ones. This website will explore the chemistry of several "feel good" chemicals, or neurotransmitters, in the brain: serotonin and GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid), with a goal of presenting an education about the effects that a regular yoga practice has on mental health.
